In Chile, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and its partners are working towards a socio-ecological transformation and the promotion of democratic structures in the Andean region. The focus is on energy and environmental policy, mining and resource distribution as well as human rights and feminism.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation's office in Santiago de Chile opened in 2008. Initially with a regional focus on Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, we have been working in Chile, Peru and Bolivia since 2023.

The thematic focus is on socio-ecological transformation as well as democracy and human rights in the Andean region. We strengthen the levers for a just transition by building networks and deepening our relationship with our partners. We promote debates with civil society actors, scientists and politicians in order to formulate new development models and create international visibility for transformation movements.

Climate and energy policy are just as much at the centre of our work as raw materials policy. Resource-rich countries face the challenge of reorienting their economic activities in the face of a growing climate crisis while simultaneously meeting the growing international demand for minerals essential to the energy transition and to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement goals. Environmental conflicts and human rights violations associated with the extractivist model are uncovered and brought to light in collaboration with our partner organisations. Through our political efforts and networks in the Andean region, we promote debates on criteria and standards for green industrial policy in key sectors such as copper, lithium, and green hydrogen.

Growing social inequalities have intensified as a consequence of the multiple crises presenting additional challenges to societies with weak social systems. Our focuses regarding democracy and human rights includes feminism, freedom of the press, and the promotion of participatory processes for rural and indigenous communities. Through our work, we support organisations that advocate against violence and discrimination targeting women and LGBTIQ individuals as well as those working towards women's sexual and reproductive rights. We approach the human right to water as a cross-cutting foundation for resilient societies.
