Steven Pifer
Director of the Brookings Arms Control Initiative

Director of the Brookings Arms Control Initiative and a senior fellow with the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence and the Center on the United States and Europe in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings.

Steven Pifer is a retired Foreign Service officer, his more than 25 years with the Department of State focused on U.S. relations with the former Soviet Union and Europe, as well as on arms control and security issues and included assignments as deputy assistant secretary, ambassador to Ukraine, and special assistant to the president and senior director on the National Security Council for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia.

Steven Pifer also served at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw, Moscow, and London, as well as with the U.S. delegation to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces negotiations in Geneva. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
