Why China likes mega hydro projects

August 16, 2010 - In August 2010, a deadly mudslide hit Zhuoqu County, a Tibetan area in Gansu Province, China, leaving behind a scene of destruction, more than 700 dead people and over 1000 people missing. Claude Arpi, an independent journalist and commentator of China-India-Tibet issues, connects this environmental disaster to the mega hydro projects in the area, and he warns that large-scale hydroelectric plant construction on the Tibetan Plateau will have far reaching consequences for South Asia.
