The Heinrich Böll Foundation addresses issues of contemporary history with the aim to enlighten people about the fact that society, politics, and public institutions are conditioned by historical processes. We promote the development of individual liberties and encourage debate on issues to do with “justice.”
Under the header “Vergangenheitspolitik” (i.e., a politics that aims to come to terms with the past) we have, in recent years, addressed issues to do with Germany’s Nazi past and how it was dealt with in the post-war era. Furthermore, we investigate the potential relationships between interpretations of history, politics of remembrance, and the present political scene. Our contributions to a culture of remembrance aim to reflect East German as well as West German experiences.
