Archive and Library

The Historical Archive contains the files of the exective committees, branch offices and parliamentary groups of the Green party at the European, federal and state levels. Archival materials of organizations close to the party and initiatives of the new social movements are a further focus of the collection. Personal donations and materials from the estates of politicians and active members of the party and new social movements make up a special category of the archive's holdings that provide valuable documentation, especially with regard to the parliamentary work of the Green Party.
The Archive Library collects the full range of material released by the German Green Party, ranging from publications of the federal executive committee to circulars issued by local branches and works of Green authors. It encompasses gray literature and an extensive collection of periodicals, online media and traditional print publications. Central topics include publications by the party and Green politicians at the federal level, the history of the Federal Republic of Germany since the student movement of 1968, the Greens in the German party system, the environmental, anti-nuclear, women’s, peace and international solidarity movements, as well as the East German citizens’ movement. The collection is a reference library. The catalog is available online.
The Documentary Collections consist of photographs, posters, audio and video material, websites, leaflets, objects and press reviews of the party and parliamentary group.
The materials may be viewed in the archive reading room. Copying is subject to fees. For more information on using the archive and its scale of fees, please visit www.boell.de/stiftung/archiv.
The archive is interested in expanding its collections of old brochures, newspapers, photos, posters, programs, flyers and work documents, especially those related to the anti-nuclear and peace movements and the early days of the party. Please contact us if you have material you would like to contribute.
Photography: An image can convey more meaning than any text. Not only professional photographs, but also personal snapshots can capture the atmosphere of a situation, document political events as they unfold and illustrate the personalities of those taking part.
The Archiv Grünes Gedächtnis photography collection is a pictorial record of the history of the German Green Party and social movements and a source of visual material for exhibitions and publications. The majority of the photos were taken for the press and public-relations work of the Green Party at the federal level and the Green parliamentary groups of the German Bundestag. A special photo collection is devoted to the life of Petra K. Kelly.
The collection, which consists of approx. 6,000 images (as of May 2010) can be accessed via a database in the archive. Please note that the archive often does not hold the copyright to the images.

Events

The archive organizes events on the history of the Green Party in Germany, current research, archive-specific topics and discussions with contemporary witnesses. Chronicles of the social movements

The German Green Party was established in 1979-80 as the parliamentary presence of the peace, women’s and Third World movements. The input from those campaigns was reflected in the parliamentary initiatives of the parliamentary party in the Bundestag. Petitions to the Green party’s international solidarity fund reflect Green work in developing countries.
The Archiv Grünes Gedächtnis has also become a repository for Germany’s social movements. The most important documents related to the women’s movement are the Frauenaktion 70 archival materials and the documentation of the Autonomes Frauen-Archiv Wiesbaden. The peace movement is represented by the Netzwerk Friedenskooperative and Netzwerk Friedenssteuer networks. The anti-nuclear archive of the Bielefeld environmental center document initiatives related to Brokdorf, Gorleben and Kalkar since the 1970s, while the El Salvador and Guatemala information centers chronicle solidarity initiatives with Latin America. A major focus of the reference library is on periodicals and gray literature related to the new social movements.

The Parliamentary Archive

The archive of the European parliamentary group chronicles the Green Party presence in the European Parliament from 1984 to the present. It contains the documents of the European parliamentary group with the files of the general secretariat and the party executive, covering a range of activities from the parliamentary party meetings and the initiatives discussed there to the specialist sections within the parliamentary party on topics such as women’s issues, development and peace policy. Audio recordings are also available of the meetings. The documents of the German delegation are the subject of a dedicated file series.
The parliamentary party archive is supplemented by around twenty depository holdings from MPs who have kindly provided their personal documents from their parliamentary work in Brussels. Among these are holdings from MPs of other EU states whose Green parties have not yet established archives of their own. The combination of documents of the parliamentary party, the general secretariat, the specialist sections and individual MPs represent a valuable history of Green policy in the European Parliament.

Publications

Petra Kelly. A Remembrance
The many photographs in the book – some previously unpublished – trace the most important stations in the life of Petra Kelly, shedding light on what formed her and giving an insight into the origins of the Greens.
