In cooperation with the Center for the Promotion of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (CPDNP) at the Japan Institute for International Affairs (JIIA) the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) organized the second Japanese-German Dialogue on security affairs. This time the expert round table “Japanese-German Dialogue on Security: Perspectives of East-Asian Regional Security” was hosted on December the 6th 2011 in Berlin. It was a fruitful exchange of East-Asian and German perspectives on security related issues in East Asia such like:

  • Role of China – the consequences of the rising economical and political influence of China
  • The critical situation on the Korean Peninsular
  • The consequences of the enduring crisis of the economic and financial structure in Japan
  • Dealing with Russian nuclear potentials

There was no doubt among the participants that the security situation in North East Asia affects Germany, the EU and NATO. A stronger cooperation between Japan and German/Europe was judged by all participants as wishful and crucial for solving the before mentioned issues and beneficial for the security environment in East Asia. Nonetheless, it also became obvious that there are still a lot of misunderstandings and differences of interpretations regarding the security situation in Asia between Germany/the EU and Japan. Therefore, the participants expressed the demand for a regular and intensive exchange of ideas about security affairs, for example by exchanging representatives to the respective regional security conferences and forums.
