Energy Atlas
The European Energy Atlas is being published at a time when EU member states are negotiating an energy and climate strategy for 2030 – the Clean Energy Package. The targets and regulations will determine the next decade of European energy and climate policy. They will decide whether we can effectively combat climate change and limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees.
But is what is currently being negotiated in Europe sufficient? Although the package sends important signals for the further development of the European energy transition, it does not do justice to the potential of energy efficiency and renewables. The targets are not ambitious enough and jeopardize the progress made in recent years. The energy transition looks different in each member state. The German energy transition was also originally a national project that did not take into account the energy systems of our neighbors. But it is now clear that the German energy transition can only succeed at the European level!
The European Energy Atlas presents a clear alternative: it serves as a compass for the various energy discussions in the EU member states and shows how Europeanization can make the energy transition for the whole of Europe — and Germany — not only more efficient and cost-effective, but also a win-win situation for more energy and prosperity.
