About us and the candidates we support

We support socially involved, politically interested young people who are committed to the causes, goals, and values of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung worldwide: democracy and human rights, ecology, sustainability, gender equality and anti-discrimination, and the arts & culture.
We support up to 1,600 graduate and PhD students from all disciplines, including up to 100 international students and PhD candidates primarily from DAC countries, in their pursuit of Master's degree or PhD in Germany.

To us, promoting young talent is a contribution to our democratic culture.

We foster greater equality of opportunity and equitable access to education. This is why we place a particular focus on underrepresented groups such as women, especially in STEM subjects, or refugees.

We foster international understanding by promoting international exchange, intercultural dialog, and networking.
We help our scholars achieve their academic goals, expand their political education, acquire new capabilities and key qualifications, gain organizational skills, and get ready to embark on their careers. We encourage them to persevere in their civic engagement.

The Scholarship Department promotes exchange and discussion across disciplines.
In our mission statement for "Promoting young talent" we describe our funding objectives.

On the road to climate neutrality

Human-made climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Everyone must and can help avert a climate catastrophe. The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Scholarship Department and its scholars do their share in this overarching societal effort.
The event program for our scholars is based on the educational concept of "Education for Sustainable Development" (ESD) (see Haan, 2008).
In particular, we empower our scholars to take the initiative and ownership. By that, we mean the necessary skillset and solution-oriented and collaborative mindset to address complex global problems and work towards a sustainable future. This includes gaining insights across disciplines, participating in decision-making, developing a tolerance for ambiguity, or challenging one's own belief systems.
The Scholarship Department is committed to climate neutrality. We have therefore set goals and developed recommendations, proposals, and measures to render our operations sustainable and climate-neutral.

Fighting discrimination, fostering participation

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung has made a pledge to treat others with respect. We believe that no one should suffer discrimination or be disadvantaged on the basis of their gender, a racist or anti-Semitic attribution, religion or ideology, disability or chronic illness, age, sexual or gender identity, or social status. Neither do we tolerate sexualized violence and harassment. Our goal is to achieve greater equality of opportunity, prevent discrimination, and promote a culture that values diversity.

In order to achieve these goals, we have adopted an anti-discrimination guideline that applies to every aspect of our support for graduate and PhD studies, including the selection procedure and alumni program. We have taken preventative measures, introduced a conflict management system, and implemented a complaints procedure .
