Information on the awarding of scholarships
Langenbroich House (municipality of Kreuzau, district of Düren, North Eifel) was purchased by the Böll family in the 1960s and lived in mainly during the summer months until Heinrich Böll's death.
The association "Heinrich-Böll-Haus Langenbroich e.V." was the sponsor of the house from 1989-2022, in 2022 the city of Düren took over the sponsorship. Following extensive construction work (architect Vincent Böll), a total of four apartments are now available for writers and artists. One apartment for one person, one studio apartment for 1-2 people, one apartment for 2 people and one apartment for 3 people.
The work grants are not primarily project-related; rather, it is important to us to create the conditions for a good working atmosphere. This is to be promoted by accompanying offers; the association endeavors to arrange readings and discussion events, seminars and exhibitions.
The duration of the scholarships is usually 4 months; the amount of funding is €1,250 per month. The apartments are rent-free. The scholarships are funded by the city of Düren and in cooperation with other cultural funding institutions, e.g. the Heinrich Böll Foundation (Berlin) and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The focus of the selection process among the applications is on the creative work of the scholarship holders.
The jury asks you to send a manuscript sample of no more than 20 pages. We would prefer translations into German, English or French, but we will also find opportunities to evaluate texts in other languages.
Preference will be given to authors from countries where working conditions are politically and economically difficult, where publication opportunities are hindered or even prevented.
Painters and composers are also welcome. One of the four scholarship holders' apartments is a studio, set away from the building complex. Here you can paint and create.
Applicants should send us color photos of selected paintings or CDs by post or e-mail. We ask for a brief biography/bibliography of about one page. Please also indicate the period in which you would like to live and work in Langenbroich.
The jury will meet at least twice a year: please be patient if necessary. Please send all application documents to the following address:

The first artist moved into Heinrich Böll's former home in Langenbroich while it was still being renovated. Since then, persecuted and discriminated scholarship holders, mostly writers who live and work under difficult conditions in their home country, have found refuge here in Langenbroich. All the guests of the house who were taken in from 1990-1994 are presented in the picture and reading book with a portrait, a short biography and excerpts from their work.
