Paula Assubuji

Ana Paula Assubuji is Director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s Southern Africa Regional Office in Cape Town. She oversees the Foundation’s strategic work in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe and leads programs on democracy and social justice, human rights and gender justice, ecological transformation, and international dialogue with African perspectives.

Her work focuses on the intersections of democracy, global governance, and societal transformation. Together with social movements, grassroots initiatives, civil society organizations, and actors from politics and academia, she develops approaches to strengthening democratic participation, social and ecological justice, and the inclusive shaping of societal transformation.

She has many years of experience in international cooperation and takes an intersectional feminist and decolonial approach to her work. Her particular interests include democratic resilience, the politics of belonging, and the ways in which African perspectives can enrich global debates on democracy, multilateralism, and a just transition.
