Omar van Reenen is a Namibian queer feminist activist and the Co-Founder of Equal Namibia, one of the country’s largest youth-led civil rights movements since independence. Their work focuses on advancing constitutional democracy, gender justice, and LGBTQI+ rights through strategic litigation, civic engagement, and creative activism. Omar has been at the forefront of campaigning for landmark legal victories, including the 2023 Supreme Court recognition of same-sex marriages conducted abroad and the 2024 High Court ruling decriminalizing apartheid-era sodomy laws in Namibia.
Beyond national advocacy, Omar serves as Strategic Alliances and Coalition-Building Officer at ILGA World, where they support global partnerships advancing the human rights of LGBTQI+ communities. A Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize laureate and Obama Leaders Africa Fellow, Omar works at the intersection of feminist leadership, democratic accountability, and youth mobilization, championing inclusive governance across Namibia and the broader African continent.
