Dr. Bente Scheller übernahm im September 2019 die Referatsleitung Nahost und Nordafrika. Von 2012 bis 2019 leitet sie das Büro der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Beirut. Zuvor leitete sie seit 2008 das Büro in Afghanistan und arbeitete von 2002 – 2004 als Referentin an der Deutschen Botschaft Damasksus. Im Februar 2013 erschien ihr Buch „The Wisdom of Syria's Waiting Game: Foreign Policy Under the Assads“.

Sie ist Marshall Memorial Fellow des German Marshall Fund of the United States und Associate Fellow am International Centre for the Study of Radicalization am Londoner King’s College.
