Focus: Populism

The epidemics of populism threatens to invade democracies and turn them into illiberal, hybrid or authoritarian regimes. Fueled by nationalism, nativism and xenophobia populism ails democratic principles, civil society and human rights. Around the world, both established and emerging democracies have not been immune. 

Is a cure in sight? How can we fend of the epidemics of populism and strengthen democracy’s immunity? How can we preserve existing and capture new democratic civic spaces?In order to answer these questions and respond to its challenges, we must first endeavor to understand the phenomenon of populism and its repercussions. Here, we offer our contribution to this ongoing task.
