She tackles taboo topics such as ‘modern slavery’ and labor exploitation, with a focus on women in ‘domestic services.’ She is one of the few who personally cares for the victims of human trafficking.
Against all odds, she and her colleagues at the “Ban Ying” counseling center are setting standards for the legal recognition and compensation of victims and for the prosecution of perpetrators. Thanks in part to Dr. Prasad’s persistence and a complaint filed with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the German Foreign Office established minimum standards for the employment of domestic workers by diplomats—including a minimum wage—as early as 2003.

The Award Recipient:
Dr. Nivedita Prasad was born in Madras, India, in 1967. She studied social pedagogy at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) and earned her Ph.D. from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg on the topic: “Violence Against Migrant Women and the Risk of Their Instrumentalization in the Context of Migration Restrictions.”
Since the beginning of her professional career, Dr. Nivedita Prasad has worked and published in both feminist practice and university teaching. The topic of “violence against migrant women” has been a constant theme throughout all her areas of work. She initially published on “migrant women and sexualized violence” and developed prevention models that remain unique in the German-speaking world to this day. She is both a lecturer and an activist who, like few others, bridges the gap between theory and practice and is dedicated, among other things, to human rights-based approaches in social work.
As a freelance lecturer and writer, she develops, among other things, concepts for integrating human rights into universities, universities of applied sciences, and social work practice. She has published numerous articles and books.
