The social question is one of the most important questions of our time. Answering it goes far beyond the issue of “redistribution”: it is about fair participation and equal opportunities, about security and recognition of lifetime achievements. Rapid changes in the world of work, demographic change, and migration are adding new challenges. However, the German social state is effective and contributes to a largely secure society. Nevertheless, there is still much to be done. There are structurally determined life risks and unequal life chances that limit the development prospects of children and young people in particular.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation's Social Atlas 2022 provides an overview of the complexity of the social system, showing its foundations and perspectives. It reveals that social cohesion is based on cooperation between society, the state, and the economy—and that its future can only be shaped through joint efforts.
