Anne Klein Women’s Award

We invite you to nominate candidates for the 2024 Anne Klein Women’s Award. Please use no more than three A4 pages to present your candidate and also provide reasons for your choice. The closing date for submissions is 3rd September 2023.

In the Syrian case the international community failed to prove that human rights are also for the Syrian people, that everyone has the right to be protected. Twelve years of this ongoing war – and the international community did not do anything for the democratization of the country, they only offered humanitarian help. The Syrian lawyer, women's rights and human rights activist and lawyer Joumana Seif is awarded with the Anne Klein Women's Award 2023.

Joumana Seif has been working in the human rights field since 2001 and supported the democratic movements in Syria with a focus on political prisoners. She left Syria in 2012, a year after the start of the uprising against the Assad regime.

On 6 March 2020, the women and human rights activist Prasanna Gettu was awarded the Anne Klein Women's Prize. Elke Büdenbender gave the laudatory speech.

Each year, the Anne Klein Women’s Award celebrates Anne Klein and her many political, legal and social achievements in the fight for the rights of women, lesbians and gays, and for the right to live a self-determined life in liberty. This year, the Anne Klein Women‛s Award goes to Dr. Prasanna Gettu from India.

The Indian Dr. Prasanna Gettu is co-founder of the International Foundation for Crime Prevention & Victim Care in Chennai. Survivors of fire and acid attacks are cared for and advised here. The journalist Pragati K. B. met Gettu in her centre and talked to her about domestic violence and her long-standing struggle.

The Anne Klein Women’s Award 2020 goes to Prasanna Gettu, a human and women‛s rights activist from Chennai, India. Gettu, a criminologist, is a remarkable and courageous  defender of human and women‛s rights, championing the right to a life free of violence, a life lived according to one‛s own wishes and in dignity and good health.
