The ground beneath our feet is truly multi-talented. It is the most species-rich habitat on Earth, stores enormous amounts of greenhouse gases and water, feeds humans and animals, and allows flowers to bloom and trees to grow. Soil is a vital resource—and it is under threat. Around 60 percent of the soil in the EU is damaged, fertile humus is drying out, turning into steppe and desert, and more and more soil is being sealed for infrastructure construction. Conflicts over increasingly scarce land are on the rise.
The Soil Atlas 2024 not only highlights the consequences of the global loss of fertile soil, but also shows the potential of sustainable and equitable soil use for climate protection and biodiversity.
